I have benefitted from getting to know facebook a little better. With that said, I have enjoyed Tweeting and blogging a lot more because I found navigating through those pages to be more straightforward. Facebook provided too many distractions and offeres to many options. Its way too busy yet it provides the instant laugh, tear, emotion from far away loved ones. I get why 300Million users subscribe to this site. Call me old fashion, I still like to go out for a drink and have actual physical interaction with friends and family. As Kabani discussed in chapter four, I see the benefit facebook can provide in self promotion on a gradual basis. So I will try to view facebook in a better light and strive to curb my cynicism.
Effective Facebooking

The first page I am using is one of the local food trucks in Calgary – The Perogy Boyz. The unique aspect of the food truck frenzy is that you have to use twitter and facebook if you want to eat some of these delicious perogies. How more effective can it be? They post almost daily their location in the city – and are interactive with their customers & take requests for locations. Can you imagine going to a place where everyone wants to see you? Knowing that people have been following your facebook to find your roaming business.

The second business I have chosen to showcase is the Peller Estates Winery in Ontario. The pictures on their page are eye-catching and I enjoy their wine/food pairing suggestions. Since I can go to their facebook page, and it is happy and joyful and not business-like, then when I go to the liquor store and see a bottle of the Peller Estates wine I am reminded of them.
Fort Calgary
For my second essential post, I was looking to find the Fort Calgary blog since I was aware that my work place has both facebook and twitter accounts which are updated monthly. I was disappointed to find that although we started to engage in social media we have fell short on maximizing its full potential by not having a blog which can display both the facebook and twitter account links. Now, I can say this and actually know what I am talking about thanks to this social media course. This blog can be used to display feature menus of the month, dates and pictures for events along with pictures of our venue. And I have not even touched on the historical aspects, renovation updates, volunteer recognition etc…
This will be something that I will be suggesting at work during our next managers meeting.
I am certainly not a ‘ pro ‘ at social media yet – but I understand how you need to utilize all social mediums and link them together to project a certain level of professionalism.
Pss Hope you are still grading Bonita !
Better ideas. Better Calgary
The firt time I followed a blog was during the 2010 Calgary Mayor election. Naheed Nenshi’s campaign was a success in large part thanks to his ablity to reach the population through social media. The interesting thing that came about this was during Thankgiving Dinner with a couple of friends, my friends university aged daughter was talking about how Naheed Nenshi was reaching out to the youth through social media. soo, after dinner she pulled out her laptop and showed us all ‘old’ folks his blog. I was so amazed at how much information was provided in this blog. From his platform to current ideas on policy, Bio, events, donation as well as up to the minute tweets from him directly. This is why I was giddy to get a tweeter account so that I can follow our Mayor, Nenshi.
ps Boita, hope your still working on marking these 😉
Monday , Monday November 4, 2012
Think of the Mamas & Papas song -” Monday Monday” You can find me crying all the time. This is how I feel about Sunday. It is the last day of the week were everything has to be finished. The laundry , the kids homework , my homework , Sunday Dinner , church , ice times for the kids and all the other tasks involved with running a household for six people.
This is one of my essential posts I need for my Social Media class – and I sure hope my teachers Bonita & Bob grade me last.
How do I change my Sunday to a day of peaceful contentment ? Well let’s define contentment…
Besties October 31, 2012
“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”
I love this quote by Dr. Seuss because it reminds me of how important it is and how essential it is to your wellbeing to have a bestie. It doesn’t mater if you are a boy or girl, man or woman, everyone needs a bestie.
And you ask “Why do I need another person in my life?” — Because as the quote states, they don’t mind your idiosyncracies (the way you apply your makeup, the way you pull out your phone at dinner, the way you yell at me when I don’t wash the dishes right (I am at one of my besties right now and that is what she is doing!), etc.). Don’t ask me how I can wash dishes and type at the same time – I am amazing!!!!!
Because when you take care of you and surround yourself with people who like you, for you, you are a better you! Catching the Dr. Seuss thing here!!!!!!!!!
Sounds pretty simple but it is actually a lot of work. Family, life and work all seem to get in the way. And good besties understand that but a true bestie will persevere and keep calling you until you have made a connection.
How many connections you need to make is up to you? I’m making my connection right now. Have fun with your besties tonight.
Cute comics!! I’m not a professional blogger either!
Okay…maybe I won’t be a professional booger (lol) but I do know that I plan to pursue blogging in some capacity. As a wannabe writer, what better place to practice and, at the same time, connect with a real reading audience? Ah…but how do you get the audience? Yes, that question still needs to be answered. There are myriads of writers out there with blogs. What will distinguish mine? What will entice those roaming the blogosphere to visit my site and then…more importantly…decide that it’s worth coming back to? Or that it’s impacted them enough to leave a comment, start a dialogue?
By doing a quick google search I’ve come up with the beginnings of a list of sites that I hope will help me (and you) begin to find the answers:
